Modelling Techniques
Start from primitives
Most models start as simple shapes: cube, cylinder, sphere, plane. Box modelling shapes a primitive step by step into the final object.
Core operations
| Operation | What it does |
|---|---|
| Extrude | pull faces or edges out to create new geometry |
| Inset | create a smaller face inside a face |
| Loop cut | add a ring of edges around a shape for more control |
| Bevel | round or chamfer sharp edges |
| Bridge | connect two edge loops |
| Merge | combine vertices |
Edge flow and topology
Good topology uses mostly quads with loops that follow the shape. It subdivides smoothly, deforms well when animated and is easy to edit. Avoid long thin triangles and many-sided n-gons on curved surfaces.
Modifiers: non-destructive tools
Modifiers change a model without destroying the original geometry:
- Mirror: model half, see both (symmetrical objects and characters).
- Subdivision Surface: smooth a low-poly cage.
- Array: repeat objects (fences, stairs, chains).
- Boolean: add, subtract or intersect shapes (holes, cutouts).
- Solidify: give thickness to a surface.
- Bevel: round edges procedurally.
Keep modifiers live while working; apply them only when needed (for example before exporting for printing).
Hard-surface vs organic
- Hard-surface (products, machines, furniture): precise shapes, bevels, booleans, supporting edge loops.
- Organic (characters, plants): sculpting and smooth subdivision with flowing topology.
Reference
Model from references: photos, measurements, or orthographic drawings (front, side, top) placed as background images. Guessing proportions is the most common beginner problem.
Exercise
Model a simple mug from a cylinder: inset and extrude the inside, add a handle by extruding faces along a path, bevel the rim, add a Subdivision Surface modifier with supporting loops to keep the rim crisp.
