Documentation, Testing and Developer Experience
An API is a product for developers. Its documentation and reliability decide whether people succeed with it.
Great documentation includes
- Quick start: get a key and make a first successful call in under five minutes, with copy-paste
curl. - Authentication explained once, clearly.
- Reference for every endpoint: parameters, example requests and responses, every error code.
- Guides for common tasks (paginating, handling webhooks, retrying safely).
- Changelog with dates and migration notes.
Generate the reference from your OpenAPI spec (Swagger UI, Redoc or Scalar) so it never drifts from the code; tools such as flask-smorest or apispec can build the spec from your routes and schemas.
Testing an API
def test_create_project_requires_scope(client, make_key):
key = make_key(scopes=["projects:read"])
resp = client.post("/v1/projects", json={"title": "x", "category": "web"},
headers={"Authorization": f"Bearer {key}"})
assert resp.status_code == 401
def test_list_is_paginated(client, make_projects):
make_projects(30)
body = client.get("/v1/projects?limit=20").get_json()
assert len(body["data"]) == 20 and body["has_more"] is True
nxt = client.get(f"/v1/projects?limit=20&cursor={body['next_cursor']}").get_json()
assert len(nxt["data"]) == 10 and nxt["has_more"] is False
Test every status code an endpoint can return, permission boundaries and pagination edges. Validate responses against the OpenAPI schema in tests (with a library such as schemathesis, which also generates edge-case requests automatically).
SDKs and examples
Official client libraries (generated from OpenAPI, then polished) and example apps lower the barrier dramatically. Keep examples in a repository and test them in CI.
Deprecation
When retiring something:
- Announce it in the changelog and by email to affected key owners.
- Return
DeprecationandSunsetheaders on deprecated endpoints. - Track usage of deprecated endpoints; contact remaining users before the date.
- Remove only after the announced period.
Final project
Ship a public v1 API for your portfolio or booking app: OpenAPI spec, interactive docs, hashed scoped API keys with a management UI, cursor pagination, consistent errors, rate limits with headers, signed webhooks with retries, and a test suite covering auth, BOLA, validation and pagination. Write a quick start that gets a new developer from zero to a successful call in five minutes, and test it on a friend.
Check yourself
- What belongs in an API quick start?
- How do you keep reference docs in sync with code?
- What are the steps of a responsible deprecation?
