Arduino & IoT Fundamentals

Building Reliable, Secure IoT Products

35 मिनट

Reliability

  • Use watchdog timers to recover from hangs.
  • Reconnect automatically to Wi-Fi and MQTT; never block forever waiting.
  • Debounce inputs, filter noisy sensor readings (moving averages) and validate ranges.
  • Log errors to the server so you can see field problems.

Over-the-air (OTA) updates

ESP32 supports OTA firmware updates. Sign or authenticate updates so only you can push firmware, and keep a rollback path (dual partitions) in case an update fails.

Security checklist

  • [ ] No default or shared passwords; unique credentials per device
  • [ ] TLS for all network traffic, with certificate verification
  • [ ] Secrets never in source control
  • [ ] Least-privilege tokens and MQTT topic ACLs
  • [ ] Authenticated OTA updates
  • [ ] Devices on a separate network/VLAN at home or work where possible
  • [ ] Plan for revoking a lost or stolen device

Enclosures and wiring

3D print enclosures (see 3D Printing Workflow) with ventilation for sensors, strain relief for cables and access for USB. Move from breadboards to soldered perfboard or a custom PCB for anything permanent.

Final project

Build a connected greenhouse monitor: ESP32 with temperature/humidity and soil sensors, a pump controlled through a driver, readings sent over MQTT with TLS to a broker, a dashboard with history charts and an automation, OTA updates, deep sleep between readings where possible, a 3D-printed enclosure and a written security checklist.

  • What does a watchdog timer do?
  • Why must OTA updates be authenticated?
  • Why place IoT devices on a separate network?
