Choosing What to Offer
Many developers can build software; fewer can turn that into a steady business. This track covers the practical side of working for yourself. It is general guidance, not legal, tax or financial advice: rules differ by country, so confirm specifics with a local accountant or lawyer.
Pick a niche
"I build websites" competes with everyone. "I build booking systems for salons and clinics" makes you the obvious choice for that customer. A niche lets you:
- reuse code and knowledge between projects,
- speak your customers' language in marketing,
- charge more because you understand their problems.
Choose an industry you know, a technology you are strong in, or a problem you have solved before.
Define productised services
Turn vague offers into clear packages with a scope and a price:
| Package | Includes | Price model |
|---|---|---|
| Starter site | 5 pages, contact form, hosting setup | fixed setup fee + monthly hosting/maintenance |
| Booking app | online booking, reminders, payments | fixed setup + monthly plan |
| Custom build | discovery, design, development | priced after a paid discovery |
| Care plan | updates, backups, monitoring, small changes | monthly retainer |
Fixed packages are easier to sell and to deliver profitably. Monthly plans create recurring revenue, which smooths out the feast-and-famine cycle of project work.
Products as well as services
Templates, source code, courses and SaaS tools can earn money while you sleep but take time to build an audience. Many solo developers combine services (steady income now) with products (long-term upside), as PandaDev does with client work, a source-code portfolio and learning content.
Validate before building
Talk to ten potential customers before investing weeks: what do they use now, what frustrates them, what would they pay? Pre-selling a pilot is the strongest validation.
