Tracking, Pixels and Privacy

30 min

Without tracking, ad platforms optimise blindly and you cannot tell good spending from bad. Set this up before the first campaign.

What to track

Define your conversions in order of value:

  1. Customer won (a signed agreement or paid deposit).
  2. Qualified lead (a call booked, a completed project questionnaire).
  3. Lead (a contact form sent).
  4. Micro-conversions (viewing the pricing page, starting a form): useful signals, but do not optimise campaigns for them alone.

The tools

  • Google tag / Google Ads conversion tracking and Meta Pixel / LinkedIn Insight Tag: snippets that record when a visitor completes an action.
  • Server-side events (Meta Conversions API, Google enhanced conversions): send conversions from the server for more reliable measurement when browsers block scripts.
  • Offline conversion import: upload which leads became paying customers, so the platform learns to find more people like your real customers, not just form fillers. This is one of the most valuable steps for a service business.
  • UTM tags on every link you share: ?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=clinic-websites. Your analytics then shows exactly which campaign brought each lead.

Attribution: who gets the credit?

A customer may see a LinkedIn ad, later search on Google, click an ad and book a call a week later. Platforms each tend to claim the credit. Keep your own simple record of where each lead came from (ask "How did you hear about us?" too), and judge channels by cost per qualified lead and cost per customer in your own records, not only by each platform's dashboard.

Privacy and consent

Tracking uses personal data, so it is regulated:

  • Follow the site's privacy and cookie policy, and update it before adding new tracking tools.
  • In regions that require it (for example the EU and UK), marketing and advertising cookies need consent before they load; a consent banner and Google Consent Mode handle this.
  • Never send personal details (names, emails, phone numbers) to ad platforms in URLs or events; use the platforms' official hashed methods only where the law and the platform terms allow.
  • Collect only what you need, and keep data secure.

Check with the owner before adding any pixel or tag to the website: it changes what the site collects about visitors.

Exercise

Write a tracking plan for one campaign: the conversions (with values), the tags or events for each, the UTM format, and how a won customer will be recorded and, if allowed, imported back into the ad platform.

Check yourself

  • Why is importing offline conversions so valuable for a service business?
  • Write a UTM-tagged link for a Meta retargeting ad.
  • What must be in place before marketing cookies load for visitors in the EU?
