Customers, Problems and Positioning
Marketing is everything that helps the right people find you, understand what you offer and decide to buy. For a software studio that means business owners and managers who need a website, an app or a system to save time or make money. Before any ads, posts or emails, three questions must be answered clearly.
1. Who is the customer?
Describe an ideal customer profile (ICP): the kind of business that gets the most value from you and is easiest to serve.
| Question | Example answer |
|---|---|
| Industry | Clinics, restaurants, trades, small retailers |
| Size | 2 to 50 staff, one location or a few |
| Who decides | The owner, sometimes an office manager |
| Budget | Can spend $800 to $10,000 on a project and $50 to $150 a month |
| Trigger | A new location, a busy season, a competitor with online booking, an old website that embarrasses them |
Then write one or two personas: a short story of a real-feeling buyer. "Maria owns a dental clinic with 8 staff. She answers booking calls between patients and loses bookings after hours. She found us on Google after asking a friend."
2. What problem do you solve?
People buy outcomes, not features. Turn every feature into the result it brings:
| Feature | Outcome the customer cares about |
|---|---|
| Online booking | Bookings arrive at night and on weekends without phone calls |
| Client portal | Customers check status themselves; fewer "any update?" emails |
| Automation | Hours of copy-paste work removed every week |
| Monthly plan | The site stays fast, secure and up to date without you thinking about it |
A useful test: finish the sentence "So that you can ..." after each feature.
3. Positioning: why you?
Positioning is the place you hold in the customer's mind compared with the alternatives (another agency, a freelancer, a do-it-yourself builder, or doing nothing). A simple positioning statement:
For [customer] who [problem], [us] is a [category] that [main benefit]. Unlike [alternative], we [key difference].
Example: "For small service businesses that lose customers to slow, outdated websites, PandaDev is a software studio that builds fast, secure websites and apps with clear fixed prices. Unlike website builders, we build it for you and keep it running every month."
Good positioning is specific (one clear customer and benefit), true (you can prove it) and different (a competitor could not say it word for word).
The value proposition on the page
The first screen of a website, an ad or a sales email should answer, in seconds: what is it, who is it for, why it is better, and what to do next. If a stranger cannot repeat what you do after five seconds, the message is not clear yet.
Exercise
Write the ICP table and one persona for one type of customer you want more of. Then write a positioning statement using the template above and test it on two people outside the company: can they explain it back to you?

- Turn the feature "automatic invoice reminders" into an outcome.
