Email, Social Media and Relationships
Email: the channel you own
Social platforms can change their rules or reach overnight; your email list belongs to you. Email works for:
- Welcome emails when someone subscribes or asks a question.
- Nurture sequences: a short series of helpful emails that move a lead toward a decision (a case study, an answer to a common worry, an offer).
- Newsletters: a regular, useful update (tips, a recent project, news).
- Customer emails: onboarding, monthly reports, renewal reminders, requests for reviews.
Good email practice
- One message and one call to action per email.
- A subject line that says what is inside; avoid tricks.
- Plain, friendly writing; short paragraphs; readable on a phone.
- Send from a real person when you can.
- Measure opens carefully (privacy features make them unreliable), and focus on clicks, replies and leads.
The rules
Email marketing is regulated. In general: get permission before sending marketing emails, say who you are, include a working unsubscribe link and honour it quickly, and never buy email lists. Laws differ by country (for example CAN-SPAM in the US, GDPR and ePrivacy rules in Europe, CASL in Canada), so check what applies to your audience. Never put private customer details in marketing emails.
Social media
Choose the platforms where your customers spend time, and do one or two well instead of all of them badly:
| Platform | Good for |
|---|---|
| Business owners and managers, professional services, case studies | |
| Facebook and Instagram | Local businesses, visual work, community |
| YouTube | How-to videos and demos that keep being found |
| TikTok | Short, personal, educational videos for a younger audience |
A simple rhythm: helpful posts (tips, answers), proof posts (projects, results, reviews) and occasional offer posts. Reply to comments and messages quickly; social media is a conversation, not a billboard.
Reviews and referrals
The most trusted marketing is another customer's word. Ask for a review when a customer is happiest (right after launch or a good result), make it easy with a direct link, and thank people publicly. Consider a simple referral reward, written into an agreement.
Brand consistency
Use the same logo, colours, tone of voice and description everywhere. Keep a short brand guide: what we say, how we say it, and what we never say (no exaggerated claims, no promises we cannot keep).
Exercise
Write a three-email welcome sequence for someone who asked for a quote but did not buy: day 0 (thank you and what happens next), day 3 (a short case study), day 7 (an answer to a common worry and a gentle next step).
