AI 3D Generation: What It Can Do
AI 3D generators create 3D models from a text description or one or more images. Meshy is a popular example; others include Tripo, Rodin and Luma's tools, with new options appearing regularly. Features and pricing change, so check each tool's current documentation.
Typical capabilities
- Text-to-3D: describe an object and receive a textured mesh.
- Image-to-3D: upload a picture (ideally a clean product shot on a plain background) and get a 3D model.
- AI texturing: generate textures for a model you already have.
- Remeshing and export: control polygon count and export formats (GLB, FBX, OBJ, STL, USDZ).
- Some tools add rigging and simple animations for characters.
Where generated models fit
| Good fit | Poor fit |
|---|---|
| props, background objects, concept models | precise mechanical parts with exact dimensions |
| quick prototypes and mock-ups | anything needing guaranteed tolerances |
| stylised figurines for printing (after cleanup) | brand logos and exact replicas |
| game jam and indie assets | hero assets needing clean topology for animation (without retopology) |
Treat generated models as fast first drafts. For production, expect cleanup in Blender: fixing geometry, retopology, re-UVing and texture touch-ups.
Licensing
Check the tool's terms for commercial use of outputs (often tied to paid plans), and avoid generating trademarked characters or copies of other people's designs.
