Projects, Performance and Reliability
Keeping a Pi healthy
- Cooling: Pi 5 and Pi 4 throttle when hot; use a heatsink and fan or the official active cooler. Check with
vcgencmd measure_tempandvcgencmd get_throttled. - Power: under-voltage causes random crashes and corruption; use the official supply and powered USB hubs for drives.
- Storage: SSDs are faster and far more durable than SD cards for servers.
- Shutdown properly (
sudo shutdown -h now); pulling power can corrupt the filesystem.
Monitoring
Use Uptime Kuma or a small script reporting temperature, disk usage and service health to a dashboard or notification service.
Updates
Keep the OS, firmware (sudo rpi-eeprom-update) and containers updated; schedule maintenance and check that services come back after reboots.
Project ideas
- A family dashboard (calendar, weather, bins day) on a wall display.
- A time-lapse camera for plants or construction.
- A network ad blocker with usage graphs.
- A learning server running your own Flask projects and databases.
- A retro gaming console.
Final project
Build a home server on a Pi booting from SSD: Home Assistant with an ESP32 sensor over MQTT, a Flask dashboard showing sensor history from PostgreSQL, Uptime Kuma monitoring, Caddy reverse proxy, Tailscale remote access, automatic updates, nightly off-device backups and documented recovery steps.
