Finding Products That Sell
Many people can print; fewer can sell profitably. Success comes from choosing products people want, at prices that cover your real costs.
Where demand comes from
- Problems: organisers, mounts, replacement parts, accessibility aids.
- Hobbies: tabletop gaming terrain and miniatures (with proper licences), cosplay parts, model railway accessories.
- Gifts and decor: personalised name plates, planters, lamps.
- Customisation: things that mass production cannot personalise.
Research
- Search marketplaces (Etsy and others) for your idea: number of listings, review counts and prices.
- Read reviews of similar products for complaints you can fix.
- Look at search suggestions for the phrases buyers use.
- Check social media and communities where your buyers gather.
Pick a niche
"Desk accessories for mechanical keyboard enthusiasts" beats "3D printed stuff". A niche makes product ideas, marketing and photography coherent, and repeat buyers more likely.
Validate cheaply
Make one excellent sample, photograph it, and test interest with a listing, a social post or a small group of potential buyers before printing inventory. Print-to-order keeps risk low.
Legal basics
- Sell only original designs or designs with commercial licences.
- No trademarked characters, logos or names without permission.
- Check rules for items like toys for children, food-contact items and electrical parts, which have safety regulations in many countries.
Check yourself
- Name three sources of product demand.
- Why choose a niche?
- Which product categories have extra safety rules?
