Sales Channels: Marketplaces and Your Own Shop
Marketplaces
| Channel | Strengths | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Etsy | buyers searching for handmade and custom items | fees, competition, platform rules |
| eBay / Amazon Handmade | huge audiences | competition, stricter requirements |
| Local markets and shops | direct feedback, no shipping | time, stall fees |
Read each platform's current seller policies, especially about how items must be made and described.
Your own shop
A shop on your domain (Shopify, WooCommerce, or a custom Flask/Stripe store) gives you lower fees, your own customer list and brand control, but you must bring the traffic.
Many sellers use both: marketplaces for discovery, their own shop for repeat customers and higher margins.
Building a simple custom shop
The Stripe Payments Integration and Flask Full-Stack tracks cover everything needed:
- product pages with photos and variations,
- Stripe Checkout with server-side prices,
- webhook-based order creation,
- order emails and an admin page for fulfilment status.
Personalisation orders
Collect personalisation text in a structured field, show a preview where possible, and confirm spelling before printing. Personalised items are usually non-returnable; say so clearly.
Exercise
Compare total fees for one product sold on a marketplace versus your own Stripe-powered shop at 50 sales a month, and sketch the pages your own shop would need.
